Family Fishing Night

This last Thursday we decided to take the kids fishing for Pink Salmon on the fly rods. The kids thought we were going to fish for the small trout at our local Swan Lake, but when informed them that they would be fishing for and catching Salmon, they were both excited and scared. Cameron said that they would be too hard to pull in and that they might pull him in! :) We assured him that we would be there to help them hold them as they pulled in the fish. I was pretty confident that we could catch some as I had had some luck earlier this week. So the plan was for me to wade out there hook them and let the kids fight them in, if they could. Here are some of the results of the fish fights:
We love Cameron's exciting fishing face!... Nevermind my beaver impression.

We decided to let him feel the full force of the fish and he was able to slowly reel and walk backwards to eventually land em'!

Debbie was able to capture this sweet pic of Cameron leaning back with all his might as his fish was trying to pull him in.

Well, Cameron won, the fish lost! He wasn't quite ready to hold them yet though... maybe next year.

Here's Reese feeling his first Salmon on the end of his line.

Reese was able to pick up how to keep his pole up by putting the end of the rod into his chest and lean back while reeling. It was awesome to see him do it all on his own!

Reese was able to finally land this one... it was the biggest one of the night. Those humps definitely create some drag when you're trying to pull them in! He did great!

Here's another male pink he caught, still beautiful before the spawn.

Grace even got into the action and loved watching her fish jump up and down in the water! However, she was quite unsure about touching it!

Some moments I wish we could freeze in our memories...

We had a great night as family. Debbie didn't partake in the fishing experience, but next year as a resident license will be much cheaper, she will be able to fish with us as well! It was cool as a fly fishing dad to see my kids learning AND enjoying fishing! Hopefully we'll keep this trend up!
