The one he's been waiting for

For years and years I have heard about the awesome food RD loved to get on his mission from the Arabic food carts. He would wax on about the lamb sizzling on the big rotating spindle, cut off the rack and placed with fries and other toppings in fresh baguettes. When we moved here to Boise he started a search for something similar, but could only find gyros that weren't the same.
Then, he found it.
The one he'd been waiting for.
He went to a traditional middle Eastern lunch put on by the International Student Services a couple weeks ago, and came home raving about the food, and a tip. He had been given the name of a market/restaurant by someone at his table, that seemed to offer what he had in mind. he'd been disapointed before, but this was so promising we made it our date.
We drove up to the Halal Market, and there were three racks of shelves in the middle, and a tiny counter in the back with a white-board of about five meals. RD said later the smell was just as he remembered, he was so excited!

He greeted them with some Arabic, and they responded accordingly. There were two spindles of meat, just as he'd been waiting for! One was chicken, one beef/lamb. The bread was different, instead of baguettes they used pita or diamond bread. As we got our meat cut off and placed in the bread with parsley, fries, tomatoes, lettuce, tahini, mayo, and a sauce I dont know the name of, the other patron eating at the tiny, worn counter asked RD if he was European.
If you know him, I thought he'd go with it, but he didn't.
We got our sandwiches wrapped, paid for, and RD thanked him in Arabic, and we left as another group came in.
We went to our next stop  on our date and ate them in the car. I thought they were really good. Really Good.

RD was in food heaven. or mission memories heaven. both really.
And we weren't sick afterward!
