Bush-whackin

A couple weeks ago on saturday, the rain and wind turned into a clear and low 50's day, so we abruptly decided to go searching for the oldest geocache in Alaska, hidden in Sitka along Sawmill Creek. After pausing on the drive up to watch the bears at Fortress of the Bear (when the brush loses foliage they can be seen from above) we started out across Sawmill Creek. RD loved how it reminded him of the Provo River, with steep sides and deciduous trees, but unfortunately we didn't see any fish. The trail wasn't as clear as many around Sitka, and soon after we started out we had to bush-whack the rest of the way. Reese thought it was tons of fun to whack the bushes with a stick he found, and Grace giggled as we passed her to each other through rough spots. I was glad we had our emergency pack and the GPS! We eventually came to some big upturned roots, and we looked for the cache... RD gave the boys a hint, and Cameron spotted it! As always, they love getting something new (though sometimes they complain about wanting whatever RD is putting in). We made our way back out, and were right by another cache at the dam hydroelectric station, so we looked for and found that microcache. For being the first geocache in AK we were a little surprised it was in the forest, so thick with brush you couldn't even see the river, when there are so many beautiful views and historical spots here. But we were happy to have another one to find :)
