Happy Alaska Day!

Today Sitka celebrates Alaska Day, a festival that annually commemorates the purchase transfer of Russian claim of Alaska to the US at Sitka on Oct 18 1867, and celebrates the diversity of cultures and historical perspectives of its people. This is one of the funnest weeks in Sitka, with a lot to do. With Grace sick, and then almost all the rest of us getting something from her, we didn't do as much as we had hoped. RD and I went to the Ball, which we had been looking forward to since last year, and was an absolute blast... I love to dance with RD! and then we all went to see the parade today. The kids have been counting down for the parade for more than a week, and were so excited to go. RD made hot cocoa for us while we were waiting; it poured and poured all morning, then just after we got out of the car it started to lighten, and then was dry for the whole parade, whooohooo!!! It 'was really long', by Cameron's view, and was pretty cool for Sitka; a helicopter fly by, two school bands, an army band and a fireman bagpipe band, lots of trucks, floats, a huge humpback whale, and people in period costume for the re-enactment. And of course lots of candy, which was the kids favorite. We had a lot of fun seeing friends along the street and being together for the parade. I really enjoy having RD home, since today is a holiday off work for him:)
