Native Heritage Parade

We found a small article in our paper, on friday, about some events for Native Heritage week/month here in Sitka. The few events mentioned didn't include specifics such as location or time, except the parade, which was to be at 2 pm. We asked around and heard where people thought it'd be (downtown isn't really big enough to not find something). We weren't sure what to expect, some people said some parade they had been to only involved five people, but we wanted to support it. We got into the van and headed to the harbor, waiting along the main street in the freezing rain, wondering if we were in the right spot; no one else was around! But after about 10 min we saw police lights, and a few people on the sidewalk (literally 3 or 4). The parade had quite a few people, buses full of people throwing candy, and several groups that were singing and/or drumming. It was realy cool! Most of the people were student aged, which was interesting. We're really glad we went. There were no kids around us, so the boys loved getting to pick up all the candy that wasn't soaked yet. We saw one woman wearing a traditional Haida/Tlingit blanket robe, but didn't get a pic sorry. It was fun to see a group of Athabascan dancers, yeah for memories of Galena! Can you read the bumper stickers on the car? One says 'Indians discovered Columbus"
